Hay Steamer

The complete solution for your horses. Hygienised hay all year round – fast, efficient and easy to use.

Clean hay for clear airways

Even carefully stored hay carries fine, respirable dust, mould spores, mite residues and bacteria. In horses this puts a strain on the airways: equine asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions, particularly where horses spend a lot of time in the box.

Steam treatment binds the dust and clearly reduces mould, yeasts and bacteria. Unlike soaking, nutrients and taste are largely retained. The result: hay that is hygienically much improved and readily eaten by your horses.

  • Dust & spores greatly reduced
  • Shelf life Still feedable after 3–5 days
  • Acceptance Tends to be higher than unsteamed hay

Laboratory-tested

From spoiled hay to hygienically sound forage

An independent laboratory analysis of a heavily contaminated batch of hay shows what steaming achieves: while the untreated sample had to be classified as spoiled according to the laboratory, the values for the steamed hay were well below the VDLUFA guide values for hygienically sound forage.

* CFU/g = colony-forming units per gram. Values for the batch tested; guide values according to VDLUFA. Steamed hay is hygienically much improved, but not sterile — for horses with severe respiratory disease, please agree the feeding regime with your vet.

Parameter Unsteamed After steaming
Aerobic bacteria 1,000,000 CFU/g < 2,000 CFU/g
Moulds > 15,000,000 CFU/g < 100 CFU/g
Yeasts 1,800 CFU/g < 100 CFU/g

Frequently asked questions

How quickly should the hay be used or fed?

It is best if the hay is used straight away – it keeps its steamed quality for 24 hours. If it is stored well, however, it can still be fed without hesitation 3 to 5 days after steaming. If this time has passed, simply steam it again with the next steaming run — just do not throw it away! Expert tip for planning the daily stable routine: steam in the morning → feed in portions in the morning and in the evening.

How soon can I feed the hay after the steaming process?

Steamed hay can be fed immediately after the steaming process has finished. It is still very warm to begin with, but cools down quickly. Many horses even like it very much when the hay is still slightly warm, particularly in the winter months.
