Water Treatment

Twin-column softening system

Twin-column softening systems (DKC1 series) with two modules for continuous water softening: while one module regenerates, the other takes over — so softened water is available to your steam generator at all times.

Operation & maintenance

2 Ion exchange vessel

Typical application

  • Continuous or increased water demand (while one ion exchange vessel is regenerating, the second vessel can continue to supply softened water)

Maintenance & service

  • Topping up the salt tablets
  • Checking the softened water hardness
  • Checking the regeneration function of both ion exchange vessels
  • Checking the salt tank, the valves, hoses and connections at the specified maintenance intervals
  • Checking the changeover between the two ion exchange vessels

Frequently asked questions

Why does a steam generator need water treatment?

Untreated water leads to limescale and corrosion inside the boiler. The limescale settles in particular on the heating elements and prevents heat transfer — with the result that the heating elements fail completely, often accompanied by leaks caused by the heating elements bursting.

Where can I obtain the local mains water analysis?

You can usually obtain the analysis of your mains water from your supplier on request (often already published on their website). For an initial indication, search the internet for “water analysis + the name of your location”.

What has to be observed when commissioning the softening system for the first time?

The hardness level of the water in question has to be set on the unit. It must also be ensured that the brine tank is adequately filled with salt tablets and water. Please note that the brine tank has to be filled with water manually once during commissioning — this does not happen automatically.

What is regeneration?

During regeneration, the ion exchange resin loaded with calcium and magnesium ions is flushed with a common salt solution (NaCl), which displaces the hardness-forming ions and replaces them with sodium ions. It is therefore always important to ensure that the brine tank is adequately filled with salt tablets.

When do I need a twin-column system and when is a single-column system sufficient?

The softening system has to regenerate after a certain throughput volume. During this process (approx. 1.5 hours) the column in question cannot produce softened water. In a twin-column system the control unit ensures that one column is always available for softening — this guarantees continuous water softening and gives the steam generator access to softened water at all times.

Can regeneration also take place at a fixed time of day instead of by throughput volume?

Yes, the systems can be programmed so that a forced regeneration is carried out regularly at a fixed time of day.

How much fresh water does one regeneration cycle require?

Depending on their capacity, the single-column systems use between 19 and 115 l. The twin-column systems require between 50 and 625 litres depending on the throughput volume.
